بالغتَyou went to extremes فيin شجنيmy sorrow وفيand in تعذيبيtormenting me
ومعَand despite الأذىthe hurt أفديكَI would ransom you منas a محبوبbeloved
You have carried my sorrow and my torment to extremes.
You have exceeded in my passion and in tormenting me,
And despite the hurt, I would ransom you, beloved.
And along with harm I ransom you from the beloved.
ياO قاسياًcruel one هلاَّwhy not تعلمlearned قلبهُhis heart
لينَthe softness of الصباthe east wind منfrom جسمهِhis body المشروبrosy-tinged
O cruel one, why has his heart not learned
O cruel one, if only your heart would know,
the east wind’s softness from his rosy-tinged body?
The softness of youth from his intoxicated body.
آهاًah! لوردٍfor a rose فوقَupon خدِّكyour cheek أحمرred
لوif only أنَّthat ذاكthat الوردَrose كانَwere نصيبيmy share
Ah, for a red rose upon your cheek!
Alas for a rose above your cheek red,
If only that rose were my share!
If only that rose was my fortune.

إرثَas the inheritance of السماحةِgenerosity فيamong بنيthe sons of أيوبAyyub
And glances inherit the beauty of gazelles,
And a glance that inherits saltiness in the gazelle,
as generosity is inherited among the sons of Ayyub.
Inherits the generosity in the sons of Ayyub.

The sons of Ayyub opened the gates of hope,
The sons of Ayyub opened the doors of hope,
and their seas came bearing every marvel.
And their seas came with every wonder.

And through their rule, guidance raised its banners,
With their kingdom they raised the flags of guidance,
and guarded the pitched pavilion of its house.
And protected the canopy of His erected house.
وإلىand to عمادهُمtheir pillar انتهتْculminated علياؤُهمtheir grandeur

And their grandeur culminated in their pillar,
To their pillar their supremacies ended,
and for a noble man it has attained exaltation.
And to the sublime ended the noble.

أنسىmade one forget ندىthe generosity of هرمٍHarim وبأسَand the valor of شبيبShabib
A king who, with the least of his might and bounty,
A kingdom with its slightest authority and intimacy,
made one forget Harim’s generosity and Shabib’s valor.
Made me forget the dew of old age and the might of youth.

Generosity abounds, and knowledge fills
Generosity fills, knowledge fills,
ears, while glory fills hearts.
Hearing fills, and honor fills hearts.

The shafts of reed pen and spear have grown familiar
I have become accustomed to the pipe of grace and melody,
to his right hand, on days of bounty and days of war.
Its right day of dew and day of wars.

And when you look, you find humankind’s sustenance
So if you look you find the sustenance of the world,
and the blood of enemies pouring from a hollow shaft.
And the blood of enemies overflowing from the pipe.
كمmany a مدحةٍpraise poem ليof mine صغتهاI fashioned it وأثابهاand he rewarded it
فزَهتْso it excelled علىbeyond التفضيضِsilvering والتذهيبand gilding
Many a praise poem of mine I fashioned, and he rewarded it,
How much praise have I listened to and rewarded,
so it outshone silvering and gilding.
Excelling in analysis and ornamentation.

And in every city it grew accustomed to finding with him
And in every land I have become accustomed to,
a pasture that answers its barrenness with fertile abundance.
Pasture corresponding to its drought with fertility.

Ah, how many a cheerful welcome from him, Ṭāʾī-like in generosity,
O Lord of good news from it, lost of dew,
greets poems of praise as one greets a beloved.
Who meets praises in exchange for a beloved.
