من منصفي من أناسٍ
فيهمconcerning them تحيَّرbecame bewildered ذهنيmy mind
فيهم تحيَّر ذهني
Who will do me justice against people
Who among people is fair to me
about whom my mind is bewildered?
When they perplex my mind
لاnot درهماًa dirham وزنوهthey weighed it out
لا درهماً وزنوه
وحاولواand they sought الشرّevil منيfrom me
وحاولوا الشرّ مني
Not a dirham did they weigh out,
They did not weigh me a single coin
and they sought evil from me.
And tried to find evil in me
وهلand (question marker) سمعتمyou have heard بشعرٍof poetry
وهل سمعتم بشعرٍ
يأتيcomes علىwith غيرno وزنِmeter; weight
يأتي على غير وزنِ
And have you heard of poetry
Have you heard of poetry
that comes without meter?
That does not conform to rhyme or rhythm
