استنشدوني لطيف شعري

والقلب بالجوع في حريق

والقلب بالجوع في حريق

They asked me to recite my elegant verse,

They asked me for my gentle poetry

While my heart was ablaze with hunger.

While my heart burned with hunger's fire

وقيلَ هل من دقيق معنى

وقيلَ هل من دقيق معنى

فقال لهفي على الدقيق

فقال لهفي على الدقيق

And it was asked, 'Is there any subtle meaning?'

It was said "Do you have the flour of meaning?"

So it replied, 'Oh, how I long for flour!'

So my craving for flour was my reply
