The lām of your cheek-down has prolonged my sleeplessness over you,
The blame of my passion prolonged my lament for you
as though it were a lām of emphasis for my passion.
As if it were confirming my love for you

If only your indifference to me was promised

grief has left in me nothing that will heed reproach.
Leave sorrow in me that listens to dissuasion

Enemies faulted your curled temple-locks,
The injustice of your rejection pained my cheeks
as one unable to reach the grape clusters finds fault.
The fault of one who fails to attain the bunches

As if under the passion of kisses, there was nothingness
ah, my bewilderment between the nonexistent and the existent!
And my confusion between non-existent and existent

Aloofness rejected my entire plea concerning you;
The harshness returned all my questions about you
so my flowing tears meet nothing but rebuff.
So for my tearful questioning there is no response

Indeed, I surrendered to my love as the necks

Of the mighty surrendered to the supported

He is the one whose hand has made our lifetimes fortunate,
The one whose hand made our lives happy
so we give no thought to the rulings of natal horoscopes.
That we think not of the rule of successors

A king: when the qualities of his eminence are recited,
A king whose attributes of leadership were recited
the nobles yield to them the keys of power.
Threw reigns to it through saying

Master of knowledge, he has hung favors about the necks of guidance-seekers,
The one of knowledge who gave students of guidance favors
until we described him from knowledge and on others' authority.
Until we described him in knowledge and following

And generosity that adorned and garlanded the deserving
so they are ever cooing and warbling.
So they still sing and warble

As the gaze befriended its beloved in its chief

He enriched the destitute, if not for scruples of piety
God forgive me!—they would have called him one to be worshipped.
I seek God's forgiveness, they would have worshipped him

Spears plunge straight like bending twigs
and keen blades as cheeks tinged rose-red.
And sharp swords slash like undulating cheeks

When his blade drips with blood of vitals
he assails his foes with a fierce, rampaging drunkard.
He throws the enemy violently like a snarling lion

jewels whose extent description cannot bound—
And gifts which his habit is to give freely from a generous hand
so marvel at the substance of a thing without bounds!

Watered and conveyed from his forefathers, the hunters

Ah, how fine the king who follows virtues
I brought close to the fire of my thought a kindling of his inspiration
recounted and passed down from his proud forefathers!
When praising, and the scent of aloeswood diffused
أدنيتI brought near منto نارِthe fire فكريof my thought عودَthe wood مبعثهof its inspiration
عندat الثناءpraise ففاحتand then wafted نفحةa fragrance العودof aloeswood
I brought the wood of its inspiration near my thought's fire,
What a pillar of support for one whose desire extends
at praise, and the fragrance of aloeswood wafted forth.
So he stretches toward meeting it, a gaze extending

فمدthen stretched نحوtoward لقاهاattaining it طرفthe gaze معمودof one afflicted

What an excellent pillar for a hopeful man who stretched out his longing,
I set out in my late master’s abodes
then stretched toward its fulfillment a stricken man's gaze!
Then turned back while my state is enviable
يممتI made for فيin حالthe state مرحومof one pitied منازلهhis dwellings
ثمthen انثنيتI turned back وحاليand my state حالthe state محسودof one envied
I sought his dwellings as a man to be pitied,
And I went on to convey Ayyub’s favors
then returned in the state of a man to be envied.
Toward prayers, so listen to my supplication and affirmation

And I went on recounting Ayyūb's favors:
If you wish, look into the prime of life like rainfall
the grammar of gifts, made up of conjunction and emphasis.
Look to the extending of his hands in my songs
إنif شئتyou wish تنظرُto see فيamong زهرthe blossoms الربىof the hills مطراًrain
فانظرْthen behold نوالَthe bounty يديهِof his two hands فيin أناشيديmy songs

If you wish to see rain amid the blossoms of the hills,
And if you want real conversation
behold the bounty of his hands in my songs.
Then hurry to my support and listen to my dependencies

And if you desire direct sight or conversation,
O you who wore the words and softness of his palms
hasten to my authority and hear my chains of transmission.
The adornment of the virtue of renewal

O you, I have adorned myself with your words and the bounty
If your words are like earrings in my ears
of your two hands—an ever-renewed ornament of excellence.
Then your generosity is like necklaces at my throat
إنif كانis لفظكyour speech مثلlike القرطthe earring فيin أذنيmy ear
فإنَّthen indeed جدواكyour bounty مثلُlike العقدthe necklace فيon جيديmy neck
If your speech is like an earring in my ear,
then your bounty is like a necklace about my neck.
