سرى بشبيه البدر آلُ هلال
وهانَand mattered little علىto أهلِthe family of المليحةthe beautiful woman حاليmy plight
وهانَ على أهلِ المليحة حالي
The family of Hilal journeyed by night with one like the full moon,
With a crescent-like radiance his cheek shone bright
And my plight meant little to the beautiful woman's kin.
Yet to the folk of beauty his state seemed slight

فآهاً على وجهٍ ذكرت وخال
Her face vanished from my sight, and her dwelling was deserted.
His face he hid from me, left his abode bare
Ah, for the face I recall, and its beauty spot!
Alas for a face whose memory I recite

And illness has concealed my body, as though it were,
And hid from me a body as though it were
Amid grief and separation, a toothpick.
Amidst separation's woe, a wand so slight

What harm if Hind's tents by me were rapped
Given that, through sickness, I am a phantom of a dream?
When I myself am but a phantom's blight?

The sun she is, remote, resplendent, gay
Yet in her tresses she has shade.
But on the bough she is with shadows dight

I am love-mad at the memory of her hair and her pledges;
Her hair's memory and troth my passion feed
Indeed, I have fallen in love with cords from the morning sun.
As though to bind the sun of dawn outright

Sleep is forbidden to my eyelids, and it is enough for her,
Sleep is forbidden to my eyes, and hers
If she is pleased, that sleeplessness is lawful for me.
Suffices if the pillow she makes right

Passion has scored his cheek, traits nurtured fair
Letters that beauty ascribed to Ibn Hilal.
By beauty, for Ibn Hilal's delight

By your life, the beloved's cheek is not covered with down,
By your life, no lover's excuse he makes
But gleams with what darkens the eyes.
But with the black of glances roams forthright

Scorched by his two fires, from here and there.
My fiery glances; hither, thither they smite

And the rising of a crescent among them warns me.
The crescent's rise warns me of my plight

What ails my head? Whenever its gray hair shines,
Why is it when my hair whitens with age
My straying revives at the memory of the beloved.
Straying in thought of the beloved recurs outright?

Let the spear support the shoulders of my dear ones
For my masters' forms are lofty lances.
For the shoulders of angelic folk are my right

At the light of glittering lightning that they thrilled.

By his two palms and his prayer, rain is sought,
With his palms he supplicates for life, his prayer
So his two states pour forth water and wealth.
Making the water well up, surge and alight
