نقّب على ودّ الجميل
وقنّعand make content الصبّthe lovesick lover بالقليلwith a little
وقنّع الصبّ بالقليل
Seek out the affection of the beautiful one,
My beloved's fire burns my wretched heart
And make the lovesick lover content with little.
Be content with little, young man
كليمwounded قلبيmy heart عليكfor you يكوىis seared
كليم قلبي عليك يكوى
بنارِby the fire of حبيبكyour beloved ياO خليليmy dear friend
بنارِ حبيبك يا خليلي
My wounded heart is seared for you
O my heart, for you he painfully yearns
By the fire of your beloved, O my friend.
With the fire of your beloved, my dear friend
ياO مصرEgypt أماeither بشمسِwith a sun of حسنٍbeauty
يا مصر أما بشمسِ حسنٍ
أوor بشمسِwith a sun of علمٍlearning ليَfor me اسْتميليwin over
أو بشمسِ علمٍ ليَ اسْتميلي
O Egypt, either with a sun of beauty
O Egypt, will you win me over
Or with a sun of learning, win me over.
With the sun of beauty or knowledge bright?
شمسa sun هدىًguidance لاnot تزالceases منهfrom him
شمس هدىً لا تزال منه
تظهرappears فيin طالعan ascendant جميلbeautiful
تظهر في طالع جميل
A sun of guidance—from him it never ceases
The sun of guidance never fails to rise
To appear in a fair ascendant.
Dawning beautifully as day begins
بسيطbroad بحرsea الندىbounty مديدfar-reaching
بسيط بحر الندى مديد
كاملfull بحرsea الثناpraise طويلlong
كامل بحر الثنا طويل
Broad and far-reaching is the sea of bounty;
The Nile's simple, boundless sea
Full and long is the sea of praise.
Full, the sea of glory is long
رجايَmy hope فيin برِّهhis kindness سمينfat
رجايَ في برِّه سمين
كالفيلlike an elephant لاnot كالرجاlike hope النحيلlean
كالفيل لا كالرجا النحيل
My hope in his kindness is fat,
My hope in its goodness is rich
Like an elephant, not like lean hope.
Strong as an elephant, not weak as a gazelle
يضمنhe guarantees ليfor me رفدهhis bounty المهناwelcome
يضمن لي رفده المهنا
ياah لكَto you منof ضامنٍa guarantor كفيلa surety
يا لكَ من ضامنٍ كفيل
He guarantees me his welcome bounty;
Its flow guarantees my provision
Ah, what a guarantor and surety you are!
What a surety, what a guarantor it is!
