هلاّwhy not شفعتَyou paired بحسنىwith kindness
One peerless in beauty has turned away.
My handsome beloved is estranged
Why not pair your beauty with kindness?
If only you had interceded with your beauty
ياO ليتwould that شعريmy knowledge لمعنىًfor a reason
جفوتyou were aloof أمor لاnot لمعنىfor a reason
Would that I knew: was it for a reason
I wish I knew if it was without meaning
you shunned me, or for no reason?
That you were unkind or if it had meaning
أسهرتنيyou kept me awake وعذوليand my reproacher
علىover هواكlove for you معنىtormented
You kept me awake, and my reproacher
You have kept me sleepless and distracted
is tormented by love for you.
With passion for you that has meaning
ليليmy night وعاذلand a reproacher مثليlike me
هذاthis one وذاand that one ماnot أجنىhas done wrong
My night and a reproacher are like me:
My night is like my reproacher's night
neither this nor that has done wrong.
This and that is what I reap
