تُشكى عوادِي الذلّ والإفلاس
O you whose standing and bounty serve my merit,
O you whose favor my glory and wealth depend,
to whom the assaults of humiliation and destitution are lamented.
I complain of the blows of humiliation and poverty,

داوى أذى رأسي طبيب قلبها
داوىtreated لرجلكfor your foot حظرهhis restraint منfrom باسharm
داوى لرجلك حظره من باس
A physician of her heart treated the pain in my head;
Cure the pain in my head, healer of her heart,
his restraint brought healing to your foot, warding off harm.
Cure your feet from the dirt of her kiss,
لكنbut شفيتyou were healed وماand not شقيتyou suffered فحبَّذاso how good it is
لكن شفيت وما شقيت فحبَّذا

إني برجلك قد وقيت براسي
Yet you were healed and did not suffer—how good it is
But I was cured and did not suffer, so excellent,
that I have indeed shielded your foot with my head.
For with your feet I have protected my head.
