O you who have, on the path of asceticism,

A spiritual state, and insight into difficult matters,

Tell me: what is obscure yet clear,

And a subject of disagreement among its describers?

It is counted as two letters when dictated,

Without doubling—though it has been called one letter.

And it is light, as you may see,

And it has delicacy, and it has grace.

Yet it is a thing of wondrous nature:

It drags a mountain, yet is delicate.

And if you reverse its letters,

Then it is a town that scarcely finds peace.

    فليس يخفى وليس يخفو

    Its riddles lie in midmorning and evening;

So it is neither concealed nor revealed.

I have mentioned it in many a description,

So let no description escape your ears.

And if it remains hidden any longer, turn away

From it, and let my speech cease.

For my speech [this morning?], like me,

    Has grown weak, by God.
