يا سائلي عن رتبة الحليّ في
نظمcomposing القريضpoetry وراضياًand content بيَwith me أحكمI judge
نظم القريض وراضياً بيَ أحكم
O you who ask me about al-Hilli’s rank in
O you who ask about the rank of necklaces in
composing poetry, and are content for me to judge:
the structure of poetry, and you are pleased with me as an expert,
للشعرfor poetry حلبانtwo Aleppos (as written) وذلكand that one راجحRajih; preeminent
للشعر حلبان وذلك راجح
ولّىdeparted الزمانtime بهwith him وهذاand this one قيمworthy
ولّى الزمان به وهذا قيم
Poetry has two Aleppos; that one is Rajih;
Poetry has two pressing stones, and that is preferable,
time has carried him away, while this one is worthy.
time has turned away from it, yet it remains steadfast.
