ياO واعظَpreacher of الشامSyria والثناءand praise لهfor him
يا واعظَ الشام والثناء له
فيin سائرall of الأَرضthe earth سائرspreading الأرجfragrance
في سائر الأَرض سائر الأرج
O preacher of Syria, whose praise
Spreads its fragrance throughout the earth.
منwhoever يَرَsees كرسيكَyour chair السنيّthe splendid فقدthen indeed
من يَرَ كرسيكَ السنيّ فقد
رأىhas seen ابنIbn (son of) جوزيهاits Jawzi علىupon دَرجsteps
رأى ابن جوزيها على دَرج
Whoever sees your splendid chair has
Seen Syria’s Ibn al-Jawzi upon the steps.
ياO نورَlight of أفكارِناour thoughts وأعينناand our eyes
يا نورَ أفكارِنا وأعيننا
أغنيتyou made self-sufficient أوقاتناour hours عنfrom السرجthe lamps
أغنيت أوقاتنا عن السرج
O light of our thoughts and our eyes,
You have spared our hours the need for lamps.
فرَّجتَyou brought relief بالوعظِthrough preaching عنfrom خواطرناour minds
فرَّجتَ بالوعظِ عن خواطرنا
فنحنُso we نفديكwe ransom you ياO أباAbu (father of) الفرجal-Faraj (relief)
فنحنُ نفديك يا أبا الفرج
Through preaching you have eased our minds;
So we would give ourselves as ransom for you, O Abu al-Faraj.
