O my lord, yours is verse whose beauties hold

a glimmer of stars or a waft of blossoms.

And a friendship whose virtues we have never pondered

without relating a tale of excellence on Umar's authority.

From every sea of verse that you enter,

you reveal to people pearls of every kind.

And on every horizon and in every dwelling where you rise,

you illuminate whatever suns and moons you wish.

But I lament a state in which the night is spent

with my mind in worry, or my eyelid in sleeplessness.

You have abashed me with verse whose outcome was

to tell people of my poverty and my faltering speech.

No wealth of money in my hand can settle

what is owed, nor any wealth of verse in my mind.

So turn it from me toward worthy peers, and keep to

the pure affection between us; let that suffice.
