أما آنَ أن تحظى لديكَ ذرائعِي
O king who surpassed the noble and outstripped them,
Oh king who surpasses all others in generosity
Is it not time for my pleas to find favor with you?
Is it not time my plea reached your ears
أيحسنis it fitting بعدِيmy distance عنfrom بلادكyour lands بعدafter ماthat
أيحسن بعدِي عن بلادك بعد ما
عرفتI became known بقولٍfor verse فيon صفاتكyour qualities بارعeloquent
عرفت بقولٍ في صفاتك بارع
Is my distance from your lands fitting, after
After singing your praise in a skilful ode
I became known for eloquent verse on your qualities?

وماand not أسَفيmy sorrow إنَّthat الثواءstaying يفوتنيeludes me
وما أسَفي إنَّ الثواء يفوتني
ولكنand yet لقدرٍfor worth عندwith غيركothers than you ضائعwasted
ولكن لقدرٍ عند غيرك ضائع
And my sorrow is not that a stay eludes me,
Fate has led me astray, away from you
But for my worth, wasted with others than you.
