O imam, whom follower and scholar alike declare
O Imam, the conformist and the scholar said
must be accorded precedence:
No obligation of preference is upon him
ماwhat [blame] علىupon عاشقٍa lover يقولsays; professes علىaccording to حكruling (first part)
ما على عاشقٍ يقول على حك
مِcompletion of 'ruling' التداويseeking healing بالضمّthrough embracing والتقبيلand kissing
مِ التداوي بالضمّ والتقبيل
What blame is there on a lover who speaks according to the rule
Not like a lover who pronounces as a rule
of healing through embracing and kissing?

لا كمن تنتحي بمعشوقِهِ النح

و فمن فاعلٍ ومن مفعول
Not like one whose beloved you approach through grammar—
Unlike one who sighs for his beloved, the sigh
some as subjects, others as objects.
