ياO خيرbest منthose who ينبيtells علىof جودهhis generosity
يا خير من ينبي على جوده
كفٌّa hand ومنand those whom يثنيpraises عليهhim لسانa tongue
كفٌّ ومن يثني عليه لسان
O best of those whose generosity is proclaimed
O best of those whose kindness grows
by a hand, and whom a tongue praises!
A palm, whose goodness many tongues extol,
قدindeed طالَhas grown long إصغائيmy listening إلىto مخبرa news-bearer
قد طالَ إصغائي إلى مخبر
عنabout راتبيmy stipend فامْننso bestow جزيتmay you be rewarded الجنانthe gardens of Paradise
عن راتبي فامْنن جزيت الجنان
I have long listened to a bearer of news
Long have I listened for some news of you,
about my stipend; so grant it—may the gardens of Paradise be your reward.
My pension; grant me, rich reward you’ve won.
إنَّindeed الثمانينeighty years وبلغتهاand may you reach it
إنَّ الثمانين وبلغتها
قدindeed أحوجتhas made require سمعيmy hearing إلىto ترجمانan interpreter
قد أحوجت سمعي إلى ترجمان
Indeed, eighty—may you reach that age—
For eight decades now I have attained,
has made my hearing need an interpreter.
And need to hear you speak, my translator.
