بطيبِ لهوٍ ولا والله لم يطب
O absent ones, for whose absence we sought solace
O absent ones, we made excuses for their absence
In pleasant diversion—but no, by God, it was not pleasant.
With ease of pastime, but no, by God, it was not pleasant
ذكرتُI recalled والكاسand the cup فيin كفِّيmy palm ليالِيَكمyour nights
ذكرتُ والكاس في كفِّي ليالِيَكم
فالكاسُso the cup فيin راحةٍa palm; rest والقلبُand the heart فيin تعبweariness
فالكاسُ في راحةٍ والقلبُ في تعب
I recalled your nights, with the cup in my palm;
I recalled, the cup in my palm, your nights
So the cup rests in my palm, while the heart is weary.
So the cup's at ease but the heart remains troubled
