ياO بيتhouse عاتكةʿĀtika الذيwhich أتغزلI sing of love
يا بيت عاتكة الذي أتغزل
My verse of praise, then the house of the one I praise—
A verse of praise, then a verse for the praised one
O house of ʿĀtika, of which I sing in love!
O home of Atikah, for whom I yearn

حذر العدى وبه الفؤاد موكّل
This, that, and this other—I try to shun each,
This and that I try to repel
for fear of enemies, though my heart is devoted to it.
Beware of the enemy, and with it my heart is entrusted

قسماً إليه مع الصدود لأميل
And he who shuns me turns away from me, yet I—
And he who repels me turns away from me
I swear—incline toward him despite his rebuff.
Surely I am inclined with the repellers to incline

So let the deaf month rejoice, I recognize it
listening attentively and beaming at praises.

And a man returns me from the door of my masters
a key to their door would better suit one like me.
The key to their door, for the like of me, I represent

By your father, O son of ʿAlī, my longing indeed
And I want not, O son of Ali, that my ardour
comes from beneath my love-stricken heart and from above.
From beneath my zealous heart and above
