جرى دمعي إلى والدي وأهلي

جرى دمعي إلى والدي وأهلي

فقالت مصرُ نيلي في الزيادة

فقالت مصرُ نيلي في الزيادة

My tears flowed toward my father and my family.

My tears flowed to my parents and family

Then Egypt said, “My Nile is rising,

Egypt, my Nile, said I have more than enough

فكفّ دموع عينك عن بلادي

فكفّ دموع عينك عن بلادي

وإلاّ كن فتًى يمضي بلاده

وإلاّ كن فتًى يمضي بلاده

so keep your eye’s tears away from my land;

So stop your tears for my country

otherwise, be a young man who goes to his homeland.”

Or else be a young man who leaves his country

فقلت أريد تسفيراً وزاداً

فقلت أريد تسفيراً وزاداً

فقالت لي بزائدها وزاده

فقالت لي بزائدها وزاده

I said, “I want passage and provisions.”

I said I want travel provisions and supplies

She spoke to me of her surplus and his provisions:

She said with her surplus provisions

أليسَ علاء دين الله أعطى

أليسَ علاء دين الله أعطى

فقلت وصبحة يعطي وعاده

فقلت وصبحة يعطي وعاده

“Has not ʿAlāʾ Dīn Allāh given?”

Isn't the pride of God's religion enough

I replied, “And in the morning he gives, and does so again—

I said, and the morning will provide and repeat

وجاهاً فاتحاً بابي مزيد

وجاهاً فاتحاً بابي مزيد

سرى ومجاوراً باب السعادة

سرى ومجاوراً باب السعادة

and honor, opening my door; further bounty

Status, opening my gate for more

has flowed, and I dwell beside the Gate of Happiness.”

Flowing, and lodging at the gate of happiness

بفضلك يا ابن فضل الله عادت

بفضلك يا ابن فضل الله عادت

وعاد حديثها أهل السيادة

وعاد حديثها أهل السيادة

Through your bounty, O Ibn Faḍl Allāh, it returned,

Through your grace, O son of God's grace, returned

and the people of eminence resumed its tale.

And the talk of her people of sovereignty returned

روت عن قرَّةٍ عينٌ تراكم

روت عن قرَّةٍ عينٌ تراكم

وعين الضد تروي عن قتاده

وعين الضد تروي عن قتاده

An eye beholding you all has narrated from Qurrah—delight;

A delighted eye narrates accumulations

and the foe’s eye narrates from Qatādah—the thorn tree.

While the eye of the enemy narrates lies
