بروحي خليلاً لم أجد مع صدوده
إلىinto القلبِthe heart عنهfrom him سلوةforgetfulness تتخلَّلsteals in
إلى القلبِ عنه سلوة تتخلَّل
My soul be ransom for a beloved; despite his turning away, I have found
With my soul I found no friend whose company,
no forgetfulness of him stealing into my heart.
Could gladden my heart and its sorrows dispel.
ويعلمand he knows بأسيmy anguish منthrough جميلgraciousness وفائهhis faithfulness
ويعلم بأسي من جميل وفائه
فماso what ضرَّهwould harm him بالقولin speech لوif يتجمَّلhe acts graciously
فما ضرَّه بالقول لو يتجمَّل
And he knows my anguish through his gracious faithfulness;
He knows my woes through his kindness and care,
so what harm would it do him to speak graciously?
No harm if with fine words he would excel.
