My sorrow for the Aleppine dirhams—
I grieve for the lost coins, their absence brings me grief and sorrow
for they gladdened my heart and my eyes.
My hands have consumed me time and again because of them
أكلتنيate at me; made me itch كفِّيmy palm عليهاfor them مراراًrepeatedly
أكلتني كفِّي عليها مراراً

وعليها أصبحت آكل كفي
My palm itched for them time and again,
Now I find myself devouring my own hands
and over them I now gnaw my palm.
Oh, what misfortune that darkens my days

يا لها حالة تكدِّر عيشي

وزمان في وجه قصديَ يصفي
Oh, what a state that clouds my life,
In the face of my resolve, time passes by
and an age that clears things away in the face of my purpose.
