My masters, how much I lament
My masters, how I complain
for a Ḥillī who grows gloomy!
To the adorned beauty who frowns
صرتyou have become منfrom وهميَmy imagining تيساًa billy goat
صرت من وهميَ تيساً
للمراعيfor the pastures يتشمَّمْsniffs about
للمراعي يتشمَّمْ
In my imagining, you have become a billy goat,
I became, due to my delusions, a goat
sniffing about for pastures.
Who smells the pastures
ماnot لهfor him فيin الشامal-Shām (the Levant) مرعىa pasture
ما له في الشام مرعى
فدعوهso let him يتقمَّمْscavenge for scraps
فدعوه يتقمَّمْ
He has no pasture in al-Shām,
It has no pasture in Damascus
so let him scavenge for scraps.
So let it browse and feed
