My lord, it has come to you on its platter,

as though it were my soul within my breast:

    a kunafa promised sweetness—

    'Egyptian honey,' as you say.

My tears have choked me, like its name,

and hastened to flow from behind it.

The pistachios have not come out of their shells

within it, though I have been driven out of mine.

    فاعْجب لسوءِ الطي والنشر

    And no sweet fragrance has wafted from it;

so marvel at such poor folding and unfolding.

So take this sweet, for which I have taken responsibility,

and do not ask about me or my patience.

It is like a doll, but it

has neither a waft of fragrance nor syrup.

May it ever remain through time as you wish,

and beyond what you desire from time.
