ليشتري الخبز منه والأدما

My friend sold his mule’s bridle

My friend sold his horse's bridle

To buy bread and condiments with its proceeds.

To buy bread and clothes from it

فآهاً عليه راحت وظيفته

فآهاً عليه راحت وظيفته

فهو على الحالين يأكل اللّجما

فهو على الحالين يأكل اللّجما

So alas for him—his post is gone;

Alas for him, gone is his job

In either case, he eats bridles.

Now in both cases he eats bitterness
