May the days of youth be watered, O abode of old age,

by blood from tears, or tears from steady rains.

O Nile of Egypt and my tears, may it not be broken in you both:

the covenant of twin fidelities—one flowing, one pouring—

like the two palms of the emir ʿAlam al-Din, when

he meets hope with radiant cheer, smiling.

He has judgment and resolve—battle being a lion-haunt—

and learning, forbearance, kindness, and generosity.

And the army's horseman, like a heading, went before it,

and the rank is like a line of script, and the Khatti spear like a marker.

How noble he is, and his father before him! For indeed

they inherited virtues in succession—what splendid virtues!

I was granted victory in the war against my days through them, and so I

am in a garden beneath the shade of the sword and the pen.
