سقىmay it water صوبdownpour الغمامthe clouds زمانa time of وصلٍunion
قضيناwe paid فيهin it للأشواقto the longings ديناa debt
May the clouds’ downpour water a time of union,
He watered the time of union towards the clouds
In which we paid a debt to our longings.
In which we paid off debt to yearning
وقابلناand we met بدورfull moons فيamid غصونٍboughs
طوالعrising فاجْتليناso we beheld واجْتنيناand we plucked
And we met full moons amid boughs,
And we met in turns upon the branches
Rising—we beheld them and plucked them.
Rising and setting moons that greeted us
فماyet no أصغتheeded لداعيthe herald of القربnearness أذنٌan ear
إلىuntil أنthat مدَّextended داعيthe herald of البينparting عيناan eye
Yet no ear heeded the herald of nearness
No ear listened to the caller of nearness
Until the herald of parting cast a glance.
Until the caller of separation shed a tear
فأمسيناso we reached evening كأنَّاas though we ماnot افْترقناwe parted
وأصبحناand we reached morning كأنَّاas though we ماnot الْتقيناwe met
So evening found us as though we had never parted,
So we became as though we never parted
And morning found us as though we had never met.
And we woke as though we never met
