عملتْ لمن جود أقلامه
ربيعspring ومنطقهand his speech بارعbrilliant
ربيع ومنطقه بارع
Made for one whose pens’ bounty
He wielded generous pens
Is spring, and whose speech is brilliant,
With eloquent springtime flow
إذاwhen طلعappeared الخطّthe writing رمّلتهI sprinkled sand over it
إذا طلع الخطّ رمّلته
فياso, oh حبَّذاhow lovely الرّملthe sand والطالعand what appears
فيا حبَّذا الرّمل والطالع
When the writing appears, I sprinkle it with sand—
When his script rose elegantly
So how lovely the sand and what appears!
