عشْ يا رفيع الذكر والشان
فيin خلعٍrobes of honor مجمَّلةadorned التبانيthe tabānī (meaning uncertain in this text)
في خلعٍ مجمَّلة التباني
Live on, O you of lofty renown and rank,
Live on, O noble renown and stature
in robes of honor with beautifully adorned tabānī.
In prosperity adorned in finery
ماnot فتحتُI opened or began يوماًever علىto مثلكمone like you
ما فتحتُ يوماً على مثلكم
فيconcerning مثلهاthe like of them مقالةa discourse ذيof one possessing شانstanding
في مثلها مقالة ذي شان
Never have I begun, addressing one like you,
Never have I composed for the likes of you
on such robes, a man of standing's discourse.
A piece for one of such high standing
تكسِيyou clothe فتكسونيso you clothe me تبعاًin consequence لهاof them
تكسِي فتكسوني تبعاً لها
فكلّso everyone منwho هنَّاكcongratulated you هنَّانيcongratulated me
فكلّ من هنَّاك هنَّاني
You bestow clothing, and thus clothe me in their wake;
You dress me, then I dress accordingly
so everyone who congratulated you congratulated me.
So we are both made joyous
