Joy erased that grief brought forth,
No sooner had the grief-stricken frowned than he smiled.
The mourner smiled before he frowned.

Smiling mouths amid tearful eyes—
Streams of tears and good tidings intertwined,
Two alike, with no telling which came first.
Both flowing, none ahead or behind.

We hold back the streams of tears while gladness shines,
Our tears flowed like rain streams at dawn,
Like a downpour of rain falling in the morning sun.
Reviving the land of a generous king.

May rain, on our behalf, water the grave of the king whose
Whose noble traits we knew to be kind and fair,
Character we knew as most benevolent and generous.
May the hand of favor remain on this gracious king.

And may the hand of blessing endure over the king
Two kings gone, one to his grave against my will,
To whom the world drew near, and through whom the realm grew mighty.
The other to captivity, though destined to prevail.

Two kings: this one has descended to his tomb,
A palm tree has two branches that equal in might,
Against my will, while this one has risen to the thrones.
One withered while the other saw life and light.

And the great tree of Shadawi kingship stood balanced:
We lost a protector of the wilderness,
One branch of it withered, and another has grown.
And found a perfecter of all things precious.

We lost a master of the necks of humankind,
When the best king's rule is recalled,
And beheld one who completes every kind of goodness.
An era like his seems to return after all.

When you consider the station of King al-Afdal,
He restored the house till it appeared the same,
You find the age of kingship has returned, just as
In rhyme and praise, perfectly framed.

An heir from a line of inherited rule,
A well-composed verse in the meter of commendation and praise.

Meeting the blows of fate steadfastly,
So he rose as glory wished, and advanced.
Firmly resolved as counsel flows judiciously.

Deep-rooted, and unsheathes judgment as a keen, cleaving sword.

As if the pillar of the house still stood intact,
A lion within it, Time lodged another lion there.
You rose, most virtuous and strong in pact.

Now that you have risen, O purest and most resolute of humankind.
With you, leader of men, fortune's favored son.

You rebuilt its lofty structure as planned.

A banner of faith, or a landmark of generosity.
In war, it spills blood, as you are the first.

To praise you in rhyme, my soul promoted.

O king whose resolve has rescued the people,
Nights I compose odes of your father's glory,
So the people's praise of him has reached Najd and Tihama.
And yours, the greatest throne in story.

The two hands of my words, securing a binding pledge from you.
In describing them I remain absorbed and engrossed, spellbounded.
