خيلsteeds اللقاthe battle encounter بينbetween زحافone who advances وكرارand one who charges repeatedly
خيل اللقا بين زحاف وكرار
Indeed, I am of a band who, for beardless youths, have spurred
I am of a people who charged their steeds
the steeds of battle, some advancing, others charging again.
Among the brave warriors with thrust and blow
قومa people إذاwhen حاربواthey wage war شدُّواthey tighten مآزرهمtheir loincloths
قوم إذا حاربوا شدُّوا مآزرهم
دونto the exclusion of النساءwomen ولوeven if باتتthey (the women) pass the night بأطهارin menstrual purity
دون النساء ولو باتت بأطهار
A people who, when they wage war, tighten their loincloths,
A people when they battle, they strengthen their resolve
shunning women, even if they pass the night in purity.
To defend the women though innocent they be
