Indeed, by God, you have ennobled my poetry,

so every verse has become like a palace.

And in your eminence I have encountered a sea,

whose praise is sweet in every poetic meter,

    كذاك الصدر موطن كلّ سر

    and a breast within which lies a secret of the All-Merciful;

such a breast is home to every secret.

And I have seen no fault in you except your bounty,

by which you have enslaved every free man among us,

and kindness—if my thanks fall short of it,

then I swear my reward has not fallen short of it.

I say to all the inhabitants of Aleppo,

the words of one who knows through report and experience:

Give up the hunt for praiseworthy deeds and high honors,

for Ibn Saqr's aspirations have already caught them both.
