فيin أمانprotection اللهGod أنَّىwherever سِرْتَyou journeyed ياO
في أمان الله أنَّى سِرْتَ يا
أجزلmost generous الناسthe people ثناءًpraise وثواباand reward
أجزل الناس ثناءً وثوابا
In God's protection, wherever you journey, O
Wherever you go, God's protection upon you,
most generous of men in praise and reward.
O most generous of people in praise and reward.
ورعاكَand may He watch over you اللهGod فينَاamong us ملكاًa king
ورعاكَ الله فينَا ملكاً
ملكَpossessed الأنفسthe souls ملكاًdominion لاnot يخاباis thwarted
ملكَ الأنفس ملكاً لا يخابا
And may God watch over you among us as a king
May God make you a just king over us,
who possesses souls with a dominion that cannot be thwarted.
A king of souls, an unfailing king.
لموَاطِيfor the places trodden طرقهhis paths كمhow many a مؤمنbeliever
لموَاطِي طرقه كم مؤمن
قائلsaying ياoh ليتنيwould that I كنتُI were تراباdust
قائل يا ليتني كنتُ ترابا
For the places trodden along his paths, how many a believer
On the roads you tread, how many a faithful man,
says, 'Oh, would that I were dust!'
Saying: Would that I were but dust.
