بروحِيwith my soul خطيباًa preacher جاورَdwelt beside التربthe dust فاغْتدَىand so became
بروحِي خطيباً جاورَ الترب فاغْتدَى
عليهِfor him حداداًmourning لبسthe attire كلevery خطيبpreacher
عليهِ حداداً لبس كل خطيب
I would ransom with my soul a preacher who dwelt beside the dust; thus
With my soul, a lover lived near the dust and found joy,
Every preacher’s attire became mourning for him.
Wearing mourning for him, every lover donned,
ووَلىand he departed فأضْحتand so there arose للمنابرِfor the pulpits وحشةًdesolation
ووَلى فأضْحت للمنابرِ وحشةً
وللورقand for the doves نوحlamentation فوقupon كلِّevery قضيبbough
وللورق نوح فوق كلِّ قضيب
And he departed, leaving the pulpits desolate,
He turned away, so the pulpits became desolate for me,
And the doves lamenting upon every bough.
And for the foliage, grief flowed over every rod.

The dwelling in his domain recalls his beauty to me;
The singing of his pigeon reminds me of his beauty,
God, what a remembrance of a dwelling and a beloved!
By God, the memory of an abode and a beloved.
