أفدِيI would ransom الذيthe one whose جبينهhis forehead فيin شعرهِhis hair
أفدِي الذي جبينه في شعرهِ
طرَّةُa fringe of صبحٍdawn تحتbeneath أذيالthe trailing skirts of الدجىnight's darkness
طرَّةُ صبحٍ تحت أذيال الدجى
I would ransom him whose forehead, amid his hair,
I sacrifice myself for the one whose forehead in his hair
is a fringe of dawn beneath the trailing skirts of night.
Is the glimmer of dawn under the skirts of darkness
ماليI have no بهwith him معdespite قربthe nearness of داريmy home ملتقًىa meeting
مالي به مع قرب داري ملتقًى
فهلso, have...? رأيتyou have seen ثغرهhis mouth المفلَّجاwith spaced teeth
فهل رأيت ثغره المفلَّجا
I have no meeting with him, though my home is near;
Why should I meet him though my house is near his?
have you, then, seen his mouth with its spaced teeth?
For have you seen his ravishing mouth when he smiles?
