I would ransom a gazelle of the Turks, whose eye
I ransom a gazelle from the Turks, whose glance
Has baffled every master in the craft of magic.
Has exhausted every master in the art of magic

نبَّاذ عهدٍ بذاك اللحظ يسحرني
ياO حسرتيmy anguish بينbetween سحَّارٍa master enchanter ونبَّاذand a pledge-breaker
يا حسرتي بين سحَّارٍ ونبَّاذ
A breaker of pledges, he bewitches me with that glance;
A covenant was made in that moment to enchant me
Alas for me, between an enchanter and a breaker of pledges!
Oh my sorrow, between a magician and an enchanter

As though Fakhr al-Din’s words had gathered from him
It's as if the words of Fakhr al-Din have enveloped
A cupbearer’s wine imbued with penetrating magic.
A straight leg on which penetrating magic was cast

Master of verse and prose—so often spoke the sweetness of this
The one with prose and verse, how much sweetness he said
And that: ‘By your life, this is not the sweetness of pure honey!’
And that, by your life, what is the sweetness of the refuge

And of excellence among men—how many of his virtues have brought delight,
And the merit among people, how much did a disposition please him
And how often shown compassion to a distressed seeker of refuge!
And how much did it show sympathy to an ardent lover

عقائلاً رقمت طرزاً على لاذ
O writer, on whose page I fancied pens
O writer, you have left pens in turmoil
As noble ladies embroidering patterns upon silk.
Composing spells embroidered on silk

Enjoy them—the Bestower’s blessings—as they say:
Congratulate him, well done O granter
‘O his feast-day, rejoice in these and silence the babbler!’
O my delight with this and suppress the spiteful
