بروحي صديق حجَّب الترب شخصه

وأذكرني معنى حياتي معناه

وأذكرني معنى حياتي معناه

I would give my soul for a friend whose form the earth has veiled,

With my soul a friend concealed by soil his being

And whose meaning reminded me of the meaning of my life.

And remind me the meaning of my life its meaning

مضى معه اسم قد لقينا به الورَى

مضى معه اسم قد لقينا به الورَى

ولا بدَّ من أن يتبع اسماً مسمَّاه

ولا بدَّ من أن يتبع اسماً مسمَّاه

With him departed a name by which we had met humankind,

Gone with him a name we knew in this world

And a name must inevitably be followed by its bearer.

And a name must follow another named

فما ليَ إلاَّ الدمع يخرج ماؤه

فما ليَ إلاَّ الدمع يخرج ماؤه

على التربِ حتَّى يخرج الترب مرعاه

على التربِ حتَّى يخرج الترب مرعاه

So I have nothing but tears, whose water flows

So for me only tears whose water

Upon the earth, until the earth brings forth its herbage.

On the soil until the soil grows its grass
