until the scattered and the strung matched one another.
Until my scattered tears matched her organized grin.

like a garden laughing where the rain pours down.
Like a meadow laughing where rain harmonizes.

Beyond the instant of her sickly glances.

How lovely—a gazelle on the hillside, guarded
She's a gazelle in the valley that wards off
by warrior-lions, who find thickets in her very name.
The lion of bravery, by her name she defends.

I lost my wits through longing for her, and likewise
My home is devoid of love for her, and so
my two eyelids: now neither reason nor dreams remain.
My eyelids - now no dreams or sleep I comprehend.

had the pen of a beard traced his cheek.
Nor did shame ever run on my cheek.

only so it would not imitate his cool saliva.
Itself from mimicking the red of lips.

without clouds falling from my eyelids.
Except that clouds fell from my eyelids instead.

My heart's straying in its love for him
My heart's misguidance in loving her

Was a path unseen, no guide and no knowledge ahead.

The grieving lover forgets, while my every word is love verse,
It solaces my agony, though my words are all love poems,
and comes to his senses, while my heart is filled with pain.
And it awakes while my heart is filled with pain.

Love, to me, though reproach for it goes on,
For love, though blamed, is to me
is like generosity to Ibn Misri: a watering-place near at hand.
Like generosity was to the son of Mudar unfurled.

Until, when I fashioned for the Chief of Judges ornaments
Until when I humbled myself before the Judge of judges
of praise, a gifted mind and a mouth were purified.
With praise - enlightened thoughts and eloquent tongue.

Most generous of all creation when the rain-stars are miserly,
The wilderness and gusts took notice,
and foremost of men when the lords throng together.
And all people and nobles gathered.

A scholar whose nobility surpasses the bounds of praise,
Ink that exceeded the bounds of praise in honor,
like dawn—not a radiant brow to portray, nor a gazelle.
Like dawn whose flaws cannot be spoken or maligned.

Yet it is but scents from his praises
through which decayed remains almost live again amid their traces.
That almost revive the traces left behind.

Mastering resolve for the heights, when they proved beyond
I extol his worries for the noble ones, though the poets failed
the nobles, who said, 'They are allotted by fate.'
And said this is destiny carved out.

They pretended to emulate the work of his hands -
O gray hair, how much toil in what katam dye can conceal!
Oh time, how much effort hides what's concealed!

in striving for glory, no foot has slipped on that path.
I have always walked with him a step ahead.

Blessed is God - what aspirations can achieve!

Misfortune never turns him back,

Nor does regret roam his thoughts.

Each day his generosity calls out his comfort:

This is the youth of dew, not what old age has claimed!

With his protectiveness he warded off every quandary,
in awe of the sacred precinct—you will know he is a sanctuary.
Reverence for the sanctuary - you know it's inviolate.

Honor your allegiance to his favors, for no resolve of old

Broke a pact - like the star - upholding its watch.

until learning and the banner vied jealously over it.
Are blessings, and for those hostile to them, wrath.

What a fine refuge for one whom a year has ruined—
Glory is dispersed among the living from old,
an ashen year, its traces embers in his eyes.
While glory in prevailing over nobles coalesces.

neither injustice nor darkness would remain in Time.
Feeding the hungry, while the barrenness of famine consumes.

Standing tall at the constellation that is the house of elevation,
'How near glory is—yet it takes lofty resolve!'
While the stars strive for its melody and take.

The edges of his hands reached every splendid rising star,
a kindness that sees chances for beneficence seized.
The banners entrusted the most reddened palms.

They went on, while Ahmed's glorious future meets him
unless the edifice of wealth begins to crumble.
Like a meadow turns when the rain flows.

pleasant blessings—and scourges to those who oppose them.

but in exalted Taghlib glory is gathered together.

Today between us peace is flung.

And enviers whose guts boil with hatred
like a garden blooming after the steady rains have passed.
As if churned by the hands of sorrows.

how do they come from you? With neither faltering nor weariness.
Vexing them like the pain of scorpions' stings.

When choosing between deeds and manner.

Or blamed for your actions.

They told me but I did not believe what they recounted,
not to behold it; when they beheld it, they went blind.
And they purported but I did not verify what they claimed.

For the worshippers circling it, holding firm.

For praise belongs only to the highly-prized.

And the fearful in its ruins cling to you.

Four will thank you from me:
they filled me with doubts, but I did not confirm what they claimed.
A soul, a spirit, growing flesh, and blood!
