I swore by what the boon companion fills and what he dictates:
I swore by what fills the wine-pourer and what fills me,
Indeed, I spent the night too engrossed to heed the reproachers' reproach.
I have given up reproaching the fair reproachers busied

When my heart calls “O House of Mihrāq,”
My thought answered and cried, 'O sons of Dhuhl!'
My thoughts call back “O sons of Dhahal!”

With my soul I court the deadly glance,
My eye's slumber; on the day of giving, I granted him my reason too.
My eyelids on the day of drink increase it reason.

I complain to him of colic—the pain of love;
I complain of the riddler’s pain of love to him,
And love's cure for me, as they say, is a boiled draught.
And the cure of love for me is what they say, with riddles.

I seek protection for his radiance, his cheek-down, and his saliva
I seek refuge for his tooth that bites, his freshness, his saliva,
By what has been revealed in al-Nur (Light), al-Naml (the Ants), and al-Nahl (the Bees).
By Him who has come in light, ants, and bees,

And I yearn for the magic that is in his sleepy eyes,
Although I know it brings about my death.
Though indeed I know it will bring about my death.

And I fill the scrolls of the post-riders with messages,
Yet those dispositions begrudge me union.
Yet those traits refuse union.

The astrologer's sand-divination in his name delights me;
And I love the sand of the astrologer in his name,
And that is only love for him who dwells in the sands.
That being nothing but love of him who halted amid the sand.

Perhaps the east wind will bring me a message,
Perhaps the zephyr will send me a message,
For the messengers' tongues have grown weary between us.
Since the tongues of messengers between us have grown weary.

The winds' night passage consoles me; how often
The course of the winds makes excuses for me, and
Lovers before me have taken comfort in the wind.
The lovers have long made excuses with the wind before me.

He who is not love-mad reproaches me, while my tears,
And blame me who feels no passion, while my tears
Like Imad al-Din's bounty, run ahead of reproach.
Are as useful as the precedents of ʿImad al-Dīn.

When al-Mu'ayyad's bounty drags its train,
When the precedents of al-Muʾayyad trail their skirts,
The glory of excellence is veiled by that bounty.
The pride of merit is covered by that merit.

Our pens run, and his qualities dictate.
Our pens flow while his descriptions dictate.

Repelling the days of complaining and decline.

When they hover over the bodies they take the place
In every crescent-like brow for their shoes.
Of every brow like the new moon instead of a sandal.

As grammarians place the name before the verb.

How delightful the lion's companionship with his cub!
How excellent the intimacy of al-Ghadaanfar with the cub!

The scion of lofty ones whose facets of glory

Ornaments sweeter than the charms of outward form.

He keeps pace with you toward glory, like a man and his shadow.

You have stood for so many days peerlessly.

Whenever He waters the days with drizzle and downpour.
If the times are watered withsetValue and rainclouds!

And none oppresses save the wide eyes.
Or tyrannizes but the languid eyes.
