لجأت إلى باب الأمير وظله

وفارقت ذلي إذ وصلت إلى العزّ

I sought refuge at the prince’s door and in his shade.

I took refuge at the prince's door and shade

And left my humiliation behind when I attained honor.

And left my own when I attained glory

وأصبحت من جند المحامد والغنى

وأصبحت من جند المحامد والغنى

ولا بدَّ للجندي من طلب الخبز

ولا بدَّ للجندي من طلب الخبز

And became one of the soldiers of praiseworthy deeds and wealth.

And joined the army of praise and song

And a soldier has no choice but to seek bread.

For a soldier must seek his daily bread
