طمعتُI hoped بالعدلِfor justice والإحسانِand beneficence منكَfrom you معاًtogether
طمعتُ بالعدلِ والإحسانِ منكَ معاً
فكنتَso you were عنديَto me بالإحسانِin beneficence غيرَnot سخيgenerous
فكنتَ عنديَ بالإحسانِ غيرَ سخي
I hoped for both justice and beneficence from you.
I hoped for justice and kindness together from you
Yet to me you proved ungenerous in beneficence.
Yet with kindness you were not generous towards me
وقلتُand I said يكفِيit suffices فقامَso he rose العدلُjustice ينشدُنيhe recites to me
وقلتُ يكفِي فقامَ العدلُ ينشدُني
حاشاهُfar be it from him يفرقُhe separates ماwhat بينيbetween me وبينand between أخيmy brother
حاشاهُ يفرقُ ما بيني وبين أخي
And I said, 'It will suffice'; then Justice rose to recite to me:
And I said justice alone would suffice, so justice came seeking me
'Far be it from him to part me from my brother!'
Far be it! It separates what is between me and my brother
