Did anyone say about a gift “who is this man?”
قالsaid لهُto him الشرعthe Law امْضproceed! ماwhat تحاولهyou attempt it
وأقْضand judge! قضاءa judgment لاnot يردّis rebuffed قائلهits speaker
The Law said to him, 'Proceed with what you attempt,
The law told it “carry out what you attempt”
and deliver a judgment whose speaker cannot be gainsaid.'
“And judge with a judgement none can rebut”
وأنتَand you ياO قاصدهُhis seeker سرْtravel! فيon جددْa clear road
واسعand strive! إلىtoward الخيراتgood deeds لقّيتmay you be granted الرّشدright guidance
And you who seek him, travel on a clear road,
As for you, O its seeker, set out in renewal
and strive toward good deeds—may you be granted right guidance.
And seek the virtues, you will attain guidance
إنif تكتحلyou line your eyes with سناهhis radiance تلقىyou find الرشداright guidance
وأينand where ماever تذهبyou go تلاقyou meet سعدَاSaʿd (good fortune)
If you line your eyes with his radiance, you find guidance,
If you use its years as kohl, you will attain guidance
and wherever you go, you meet Saʿd—good fortune.
And wherever you go, you meet with happiness
فافْخرso boast! بهthrough him سحبthe clouds of الحياlife-giving rain إنif صاباit pours
واسْتوتْand became level المياهthe waters والأخشاباand the timbers
So boast through him over the rain-clouds, if rain pours,
So boast of it, clouds of life, if it gears up
and the waters rise level with the timbers.
And the waters and wooden planks became equal
ولاand do not تقلsay! كانَhe was غماماًa cloud ورحلand departed
كانَhe was وماand not انْفكَّhas ceased الفتىthe young man ولمand not يزلhe ceases
And do not say, 'He was a cloud, and departed';
And do not say it was a cloud and departed
he was—and the young man has not ceased, and still remains.
It was and the noble youth did not cease nor desist
بابa door سواهother than his اهْجرabandon! عداكmay it pass you by عيبdisgrace
وصغِّرand make diminutive! الباب'door' فقلthen say! بويبa little door
Abandon any door but his—may disgrace pass you by—
Apart from it, shun others' faults
and make 'door' diminutive: say 'buwayb.'
And minimize the door so say “a little”
هذاthis is الذيthe one who يفعلbestows فيناupon us الطولاbounty
فقدمso put first! الفاعلthe subject فهوfor it is أولىmore deserving
This is he who bestows bounty upon us;
This one who acts upon us, the tall
so put the subject first: it has greater claim.
So mention the agent first, for it is more fitting
جودgenerosity بهby which أنسىhe made forgotten أحاديثَtales of المطرrain
فليسَso he does not يحتاجneed لهاof them إلىto خبرa report
A generosity by which he made us forget tales of rain;
Its generosity made me forget rain tales
thus he needs no report of them.
For it has no need of news for it
مثلlike الهباdust فيهabout him كلامthe talk of العذَّلthe reproachers
والريحand wind تلقاءbefore الحياthe rain المنهلpouring down
Reproachers' talk of him is like dust,
The like of its gifts, the words of blamers
and wind confronting pouring rain.
And the wind facing the downpouring clouds
وبحرand a sea of شعرverse خضتهُI waded through it لذكرهِto mention him
وغصتand I dived فيinto البحرِthe sea ابْتغاءseeking درِّهits pearls
And a sea of verse I waded through to mention him,
And a sea of poetry churned for mentioning it
and dived into the sea in quest of its pearls,
And I dove into the sea seeking its pearls
حتَّىuntil ملاfilled عينيmy eyes نداهhis bounty عيناready money
وطبتُand I became content نفساًin spirit إذwhen قضيتُI discharged ديناa debt
until his bounty filled my eyes with ready money,
Until my eyes filled with its radiance, springs
and I felt content when I discharged a debt.
And I delighted a soul when I fulfilled a debt
دونكهاtake it! معسولةhoney-sweet الآدابthe refinements

Take it, honey-sweet in its refinements,
Apart from it, refined in manners
blended with the wit of grammatical inflection.
Mixed with the saltiness of grammar
مضىpassed بهاwith it الليلthe night مضيِّlike the passage of الأنجمthe stars
وباتand spent the night زيدٌZayd ساهراًawake لمdid not ينمsleep
The night passed with it as the stars pass,
The night passed with it passing of stars
and Zayd spent the night awake, without sleeping.
And Zayd stayed up awake, did not sleep

وإنand if تجدyou find عيباًa flaw فسدّthen mend! الخللاthe breach
So open for it a manifest door of acceptance,
So open for it the door of acceptance that appears
and if you find a flaw, mend the breach.
And if you find a fault, then mend the defect

May you ever be praised aloud, possessed of favors
You remain heard of praise, with favors
roaming and circulating upon tongues.
Descending, circulating among tongues
ماno لعداكfor your enemies رايةa banner تقامis raised
وليسand there is not غيرanything but الكسرdefeat والسلامand peace
No banner is raised for your enemies,
None have a banner erected but you
and there is nothing but defeat—and peace.
And there is no declension except kasra and peace
