سألته عن قومِه فانْثنى

يعجب من إفراطِ دمعي السخي

يعجب من إفراطِ دمعي السخي

I asked him about his kin, and he turned,

I asked him about his people, so he bent down low

marveling at the profusion of my generous tears.

He was amazed at my overflowing generous tears

وأبصرَ المسكَ وبدرَ الدُّجى

وأبصرَ المسكَ وبدرَ الدُّجى

فقالَ ذا خالِي وهذا أخي

فقالَ ذا خالِي وهذا أخي

And he beheld musk and the full moon of the night,

And he saw the musk and the full moon in the darkness

so he said, “This is my maternal uncle, and this is my brother.”

So he said, "This is my uncle, and this is my brother"
