لله خال على خدِّ الحبيب له

لله خال على خدِّ الحبيب له

في العاشقين كما شاء الهوى عبث

في العاشقين كما شاء الهوى عبث

How wondrous the mole on the beloved’s cheek! It

The mark of my love on the beloved's cheek

makes sport of lovers as passion wills.

Is as fate willed among lovers, just mischief

أورثته حبَّة القلب القتيل به

أورثته حبَّة القلب القتيل به

وكان عهديَ أنَّ الحالَ لا يرِث

وكان عهديَ أنَّ الحالَ لا يرِث

I bequeathed it the kernel of the heart slain by it,

I bequeathed to him a slain heart's seed

yet I had understood that the state does not inherit.

Though I never thought feeling would persist
