كتمhe concealed الحبّlove جهدهwith all his effort فأزاعهbut revealed it
كتم الحبّ جهده فأزاعه
مدمعa tearful eye زادincreased قسمهits share فأشاعهand so proclaimed it
مدمع زاد قسمه فأشاعه
He concealed his love with all his might, but it was revealed
He suppressed his love, but his tears betrayed him,
by a tearful eye whose share grew and which proclaimed it.
Flowing freely, divulging his secret.
ليسَthere is not ليfor me منfrom ذويthose possessing الملاحةbeauty إلاexcept الدthe tears (first part)
ليسَ لي من ذوي الملاحة إلا الد
مع(completes 'tears') قامتarose بهthrough it عليّagainst me الشناعهscandal
مع قامت به عليّ الشناعه
From the beautiful, I have nothing but tears;
Of wise counsel I have none but tears -
through them, scandal has arisen against me.
With them my shame confronts me.
أمرَتنيcommanded me الأشجانsorrows أمرthe command الندىgenerosity لابto Ibn (first part)
أمرَتني الأشجان أمر الندى لاب
ن(completes 'Ibn,' meaning 'son') عليّAli فقلتso I said سمعاًhearing وطاعهand obedience
ن عليّ فقلت سمعاً وطاعه
Sorrows commanded me as generosity commands Ibn
Passion commanded me as dew commands the grass,
Ali; I said, "I hear and obey."
And I obeyed, listening intently.
دامmay he endure قاضيjudge القضاةthe judges بحرa sea علومbranches of learning
دام قاضي القضاة بحر علوم
وندىand generosity عمَّencompassed سنَّةthe Sunnah وجماعهand the community
وندى عمَّ سنَّة وجماعه
May the chief judge remain a sea of learning
May the Judge of all judges, ocean of knowledge,
and generosity encompassing the Sunnah and the community.
Remain, and may his justice encompass all.
منamong هباتgifts الوهَّابthe Bestower فيamong الخلقcreated beings تبقىendure
من هبات الوهَّاب في الخلق تبقى
طولthroughout دهرan age وفيand among العدىenemies سمّpoison ساعهa moment; an hour
طول دهر وفي العدى سمّ ساعه
One of the Bestower’s gifts, enduring among creation
Among the Creator's gifts to mankind are traits
for an age, yet to enemies a poison fatal in a moment.
That endure forever, while an enemy's rage lasts but an hour.
ليسthere is not فيهin him عيبa fault سوىexcept فرطexcess جودgenerosity
ليس فيه عيب سوى فرط جود
قدindeed نهاناhas forbidden us عنfrom مستحبthe commendable practice القناعهcontentment
قد نهانا عن مستحب القناعه
He has no fault except excessive generosity,
He is flawless but for excessive generosity -
which has forbidden us the commendable virtue of contentment.
He has forbidden us from desirable moderation.
علمتناtaught us نعماهhis bounty وصفdescribing علاهhis eminence
علمتنا نعماه وصف علاه
فلهاso to it belongs الفضلthe credit بالغنىfor wealth والبراعهand eloquence
فلها الفضل بالغنى والبراعه
His bounty taught us to describe his eminence;
His blessings have taught us to describe his transcendence -
so it deserves the credit for wealth and eloquence.
To them belong merit, wealth and skill.
