سلامٌ على عهدِ الصَّبابة والصِّبا
سلامُthe greeting of بعيدone far away الدارhome لاno غَرْوَwonder إنif صَباhe yearns
سلامُ بعيد الدار لا غَرْوَ إن صَبا
Greetings to the days of ardent love and youth—
Greetings to the days of youth and adolescence
Greetings from one far from home; no wonder if he yearns.
Greetings from afar, no hostility if it pours
مفارقparted from أوطانhomelands لهof his وشبيبةand youth
مفارق أوطان له وشبيبة
إذاwhen شرَّقتwent east أهلthe people of التواصلfellowship غرَّباhe went west
إذا شرَّقت أهل التواصل غرَّبا
Parted from his homelands and his youth,
A foreign land is his home and youth
When those in fellowship turn east, he turns west.
When friends from home shine, he is downcast
يعَاوِدُrevisits أحشاهُhis innermost parts منfrom الشوقِlonging فاطِرٌa rending pang
يعَاوِدُ أحشاهُ من الشوقِ فاطِرٌ
ويتلوand recites عليهِto him آخرَthe last of الآيِthe verses مِنْfrom سَباSaba
ويتلو عليهِ آخرَ الآيِ مِنْ سَبا
A rending pang of longing revisits his innermost heart,
Yearning rends his heart
And recites to him the final verses of Saba.
And he recites the last verses of Saba
وماand not زالceased صبًّاardently in love بالأحبةِfor the beloved ones والهاًdistraught with longing
وما زال صبًّا بالأحبةِ والهاً
إلىuntil أنthat حكَاهimitated him دمعهُhis tears فتصبَّباand then poured forth
إلى أن حكَاه دمعهُ فتصبَّبا
And he remained lovesick, distraught with longing for his beloveds,
He remained infatuated with loved ones
Until his tears imitated him and poured forth.
Until his tears recounted his story and poured
