    Grant that she is a gazelle, yet one that does not turn;

then why is her supple flank not free of harshness?

And a kiss that a lip sent in sleep

from you at night—why did it not revisit my lip?

just as the bounty of gifts keeps visiting me from

Ali, worthy of eminence, renown, and distinction,

from Ibn Fadl al-Ilah, who has risen to ranks

whose like no star has reached upon the sphere.

From one whose bounty does not forget a disheveled man's plight: if

he spends the morning in want, by evening he is beside a rock pool.

My flesh and my bones have grown upon his bounty,

to their full growth—may it never weary or turn away.

I shall surely give thanks for his favors with that and this,

whether I live in this world or die.
