يا صاحبيّ أرانا الدهر شوَّالا

فبادرا وانْصبا للذّة الحالا

O my two companions, time has shown us Shawwal.

So hasten, both of you, and set your affairs in order for pleasure.

لا تحذرا مع عفو الله موبقة

لا تحذرا مع عفو الله موبقة

تحصى ولا مع ندى السلطان إقْلالا

تحصى ولا مع ندى السلطان إقْلالا

With God's pardon, fear no ruinous sin

Being counted against you, nor poverty with the sultan's bounty.

جادَ المؤيد حتَّى كدتُ أحسبه

جادَ المؤيد حتَّى كدتُ أحسبه

مع فضل فطنته لا يعرف المالا

مع فضل فطنته لا يعرف المالا

Al-Mu’ayyad gave so freely that I almost thought him,

For all his keen intelligence, unacquainted with money.

ولا كحّلت بمرأى مثله بصري

ولا كحّلت بمرأى مثله بصري

هذا وقد جبتُ ظهر الأرض أميالا

هذا وقد جبتُ ظهر الأرض أميالا

Never have I kohled my eyes with the sight of his equal,

This, though I have traversed the earth's back for miles.

فليهنه من هلال العيد مقترف

فليهنه من هلال العيد مقترف

يدنو فيركع إعظاماً وإجلالا

يدنو فيركع إعظاماً وإجلالا

May the Eid crescent, a sinner, bring him joy,

Drawing near, then bowing in veneration and reverence,

حتَّى ترى نونه من فرط خدمتها

حتَّى ترى نونه من فرط خدمتها

تودّ لو صيرت في أفقها دالا

تودّ لو صيرت في أفقها دالا

Till you see its nūn, so ardent in its service,

Wishing it could be made a dāl upon its horizon.
