إذا الله كافى منعماً عن مقصرٍ
فكافىthen may He reward شهابShihab الدينal-Din أحسنthe finest منعمbenefactor
فكافى شهاب الدين أحسن منعم
If God requites a benefactor on my behalf, remiss as I am,
If God rewards a benefactor on behalf of one who falls short,
then may He requite Shihab al-Din—the finest of benefactors.
then may He reward Shihab al-Din, the finest benefactor.
فكمfor many a طوقcollar سنجابٍof squirrel fur سجعتI have cooed بمدحهin its praise
فكم طوق سنجابٍ سجعت بمدحه
فياso, oh حسنbeauty طوقcollar الساجعthe cooing one المترنمthe melodious singer
فيا حسن طوق الساجع المترنم
For many a squirrel-fur collar have I rhymed in praise of him;
For I have cooed in praise of many a squirrel-fur collar.
