By a garden of beauty, with cheek-down for its fence,

succor a soul that now has need of you.

    ولو شاءَ ذاك الحسنُ هانَ علاجها

    And rescue a youth whose soul has approached death;

if that beauty willed it, its cure would be easy.

For many a night has found its balance through you,

with a cup whose admixture came from your front teeth.

Far be it from you to let a sick lover's last breath expire,

while its need for renewed union remains unmet.

    فما بال عذَّالي يزيد انْزعاجها

    And I rest in the grace of steadfast endurance;

why, then, do my reproachers grow more agitated?

    وما الدَّهر إلاَّ غمَّةٌ وانفراجها

    I watch for relief from the anguish of parting;

and time is nothing but distress and its release.

My drinking companion, here is rain: with its drops mix

for us a wine whose glass is almost ablaze.

And breed with it the pearls of bubbles; just so

raindrops beget the pearls of the seas.

And pair front teeth with bubbles, for it is only

their pairing that adorns pearls upon a string.

And quench my sorrow with this cup, for I

see lamps go out while it extinguishes its own lamp.

If this necklace has adorned the neck of pleasure,

the virtues' crown has surely adorned their head:

a chief—when you let his name run through praises,

you see how joy flows through the [lofty virtues?].

For their houses have been raised upon him alone,

and their broad roads have been laid out toward him alone.

    فيا حبَّذا من تاجها ورتاجها

    By his pens the lands are protected and held;

how excellent he is as their crown and their great gate!

As though we—the edges of his pens upon his pages—

were an army's spearheads, with ink their dust cloud.

Every marvel of the choicest diction is theirs,

whose stirring gladdens the thoughts of reciters.

It delights you with the magic of eloquence, yet only

its spittle, like delusion, fills you with dread.

Through him the finest necklaces were strung, and corrected

were the errors and crookedness of humankind's understanding.

Their sea has settled on the coast of al-Sham, and forth have come

pearls nurtured by its fresh water, not its brine.

A noble-born man keeps glories from my gaze [text unclear],

whose bounty pours down, or whose fury charges.

A man of virtues before whose glory have yielded

the boasts of a people whose disputation once burned hot.

The scrolls of his handwriting, in their loveliness, seem

the waists of beauties, their trimness plain to see.

Gifts of kindness beside his bounty seem

a prayer whose deficiency and incompleteness he makes good.

So his gifts are finer than the clouds' downpour,

and finer than those gifts is how freely they flow.

If our thoughts have fallen short in praising him,

long indeed has been their journey through the night of written lines.

If he has left Egypt's broad pass empty, he has indeed journeyed by night,

and at his cherished appearance the dust cried, 'Behold!'

My lord, I have a yearning that keeps an eye awake,

whose plea is weak before sleeplessness's questioning.

So to sleeplessness belongs all that its eyelids encircle,

and to tears, all that its broad paths encircle.

You sent, throughout the days, a lordship beneath me [text unclear],

for your house—great in itself, and great its offspring.

So no nobility has any homecoming but to you,

and no song of praise turns anywhere but to you.
