Perform the rites of grief, you two; now is their time,

For a morning sun I mourned at noon.

Do not begrudge me an outpouring of tears,

Many-hued tears that will sear me if I hoard them,

For one absent from me, though her form is in my heart,

As though I had moved her from my eye into my heart.

They say, “How much weeping you pour out for a maiden!”

Yet they do not know the blessing I have lost.

    Through my love for you, you ruled all six directions around me;

For you are their mistress—and whoever said so was not mistaken.

Ah, in God's cause, a sun of beauty—

And if she was not the sun of day, she was its sister.

I knew her for a little while, and she left behind

Unending grief—would that I had never known her!

Some people said, “There is relief in tears.”

By my life, that is a relief I have never known.

What are tears but an eye I have melted

In grief for you, or lifeblood I have washed away?

    وأما أحاديث الكرى فرفعتها

    After your departure, I raised my eyelids to the darkness;

As for tales of sleep, I put them aside.

And my fate said, “After ease, take

Brimming cups of grief and sorrow”; I said, “Here!”

I wept for you, for the beauty I had witnessed,

And for the radiant virtues I had known,

And for a grave's garden where a branchlike figure came to rest—

By my life, it is fragrant, and fragrant is its plant.

And I sought a wilderness's rugged ground; for

Gazelles dwell only in the wilderness's rough and lifeless wastes.

Both of us lie prostrate, wasted in body; if she knew,

She whom I mourned would mourn me in her grave.

My soul be her ransom! When I visit her grave, I hide from her

My burning anguish; were I to tell her, I would wrong her.

A hidden treasure of beauty in whom I once rejoiced,

Yet against my will I buried her in the dust.

And a maiden whose tender affection was once mine—

Nothing remains to me but calling her and describing her.

I call to the fair one's dust, with earth between us,

And her silence weighs upon the love-stricken one's silence.

It is grief enough to have no helper against sorrow,

Save that, beneath the darkness, I brought her back to life,

And the fashioning of tender words about you,

As though I strung them into verse from scattered tears.

You have passed away; there is no pleasure in life after you,

Nor in wishes I might fulfill, were I to live on.

Farewell to the world: gone is the one

For whose sake I sought and desired it.
