The purity of my affection is well known to you, so I do not

Hide some things within my soul while revealing others.

No need for evidence of a proof attested

In two assemblies by friends and foes.

Oh, for companions, despite my weakness and their strength—

And mine are grateful yearnings and words to dictate.

And this suffices my heart, if rejection means contentment:

Then cure me with the very thing that was the disease.

And take, O dweller in my heart, cups of wine:

Were a stone to touch them, joy would touch it.

And tell him whose heart, too, has hardened into stone:

Why has no water gushed from it, as from smooth rock?

Alas for youth’s prime, once mine and now gone!

And I gained a “prime”—sharkh—in exchange, but without khāʾ: sharr, “evil.”
